Traditional region of the Ammergau Alps
The residents of Oberammergau are not only proud of their Ammergau Alps, but also of their traditions. Bavarian customs are proudly maintained in this area and on many Sundays and public holidays people wear the typical Bavarian costume: dirndls and lederhosen. Bavarian customs and traditions are a kind of legacy that people look back on with pleasure and happily pass on to future generations.
The Leonhardi Ride, for example, is known far beyond Bavaria's borders as a symbol of Bavarian customs.
Maypole tradition in Bavaria
A popular custom not only in the Ammergau Alps region of Bavaria is the setting up of a maypole, a tradition that can be found almost everywhere in Bavaria. The custom dates back to the 16th century, when people began setting up a tree that had been peeled and decorated with wreaths on May 1st. The maypole itself is a symbol of prosperity and growth, as well as luck and blessings. The colors of the tree also have symbolic power. A tree decorated in green means hope of meeting the chosen one. White jewelry means that the relationship will last a long time and red jewelry symbolizes love for a woman.
Combine holidays and traditions
The Ludwig der Bayer monastery hotel also has over 400 years of history and tradition that is tangible. The hotel opposite Ettal Monastery is also a good starting point for excursions to other places and to learn more about the larger and smaller traditional festivals and customs.
