Guided tour of the Ettal brewery

The brewery at Ettal Monastery is one of the few remaining genuine monastery breweries that is run by monks. Ettal Monastery beers have been brewed in the monastery brewery for over 400 years.

Visitors to Ettal Monastery do not immediately find the monastery's own brewery. Only when you walk around the monastery grounds do you discover the monastery brewery, embedded in the overall ensemble of buildings.

The history of the monastery brewery

Even though the brewery buildings are very historic, the technology of the time is hidden inside. The experiences from that time have been incorporated into today's recipes. The combination of the firm will to preserve traditions, supplemented by the most modern brewing and distillation technology, creates the unique quality of the products. When brewing the monastery beers, the monks still attach great importance to not producing fully automated beer at the push of a button, but rather a beer that can be influenced by traditional handwork, as in the past.
This is how the much-praised Ettal monastery beers are created from the crystal-clear water of the Ammergau mountains.

The brewery tour

If you would like to try one of the monastery beers or learn how the famous beer is made, a brewery tour is a good option. During the tour you have the opportunity to explore the traditional production facilities, hear exciting and funny anecdotes from over 400 years of history, and of course taste the monastery beers.

The meeting point for the tour is the archway to the brewery. You start in the old and new brewhouse and then go to the bottling and barrel filling. You then get an insight into the fermentation and storage cellar of the monastery beers and finally you visit the brewery museum. In the brewery lounge you have the opportunity to taste the beers. The brave ones can try out the "finger wrestling machine" during the tasting.
