Besides our beautiful landscape, we also have a great deal to offer culturally . There's our Benedictine monastery of Ettal, founded in 1330 by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian , with its impressive basilica , stately Rococo sacristy, and imposing monastery library . But the region surrounding our monastery is also full of cultural highlights: the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ludwig II's royal castles , the world-famous Passion Play town of Oberammergau with its magnificent Lüftlmalerei (fresco paintings) and woodcarvings, various local history museums, and the renowned Wieskirche ( Pilgrimage Church of Wies ) are all more than worth a visit.
