It is home to the Ammer wild river to which the nature park owes its name. It is one of the few remaining wild rivers of its kind. It flows through the alpine landscape whose mountain hay forms the basis for the hay liqueur produced in the Ettal Abbey. More than two dozen species of orchid can be found in the moorland. The yellow-flowering 'Karlspeter', a remnant of the Ice Age, exists nowhere else in Central Europe. The forests in the Ammergau Alps provide protection against the risks posed by the mountains. And finally, the mountains themselves. To get a good view of the nature park, you need to climb up high. Up the Kreuzspitze. The region's highest mountain offers spectacular views.
