Linderhof Castle Bavaria, also known as the “Royal Villa”, is located in the Ettal municipality in southern Bavaria and is a Castle, which was commissioned by the fairytale king, King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The construction of the castle took 16 years. The complex was completed in 1886 and today it is one of the most beautiful castles in Bavaria and a tourist magnet. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Linderhof Castle Bavaria was built on the site where the "King's Cottage" once stood. The castle is one of four castles in Bavaria that date back to King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Linderhof is the only castle that was completed during the fairytale king's lifetime and where he often stayed. Inspired by Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser, King Ludwig II had an artificial stalactite cave created with spectacular light and sound effects—a technical masterpiece for its time. Today, visitors can expect a fascinating atmosphere of color, water, and music—and a stunning glimpse into the fairytale king's fantasy world.
Fascinating park
The palace gardens were laid out between 1874 and 1880, along with the magnificent palace. The planning was commissioned Carl von EffnerThe park combines various garden forms, with elements from Rococo and Baroque gardens evident. A formal garden area and an English landscape garden can also be found here. The park is one of the outstanding examples of garden art from the historicist period. In front of the palace is the Neptune fountain with its horse figures. The grounds of the palace park also include exotic park buildings such as the Moorish Kiosk and the Venus Grotto - a unique building of its time.
