Zugspitze in summer
The Zugspitze: the mountain of superlatives. A popular ski resort in winter, and a no less attractive destination in summer. The mountain is home to three glaciers, as well as an exciting range of experiences and the unique 360° panoramic view of 400 Alpine peaks in Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. In good weather conditions, you can even see as far as Munich.
The way to the Zugspitze
The nostalgic cog railway and the glacier railway take you comfortably to the top of the Zugspitze. Each stage of the Zugspitze round trip is a special experience and shows the mountain from the most magnificent angles. There is no shortage of gastronomic options at the summit either: while you enjoy the view from Germany's highest mountain, the Sonnalpin glacier restaurant and the glacier garden tempt you with culinary highlights. The descent into the valley with the new Zugspitze cable car is an adventurous experience. In just 10 minutes you can reach the valley from the mountain peak and enjoy breathtaking views from the glass cabins over the Alpine foothills and the romantic Eibsee at the foot of the Zugspitze.
The Zugspitze glacier – a world of ice and snow
A little further below the summit, but no less exciting, is the Zugspitze glacier. A landscape of snow and ice that is thousands of years old characterizes the mountain and fascinates visitors from all over the world. Interested nature lovers can take a close look at the glacier on free glacier tours or deepen their knowledge of the fascinating world of ice and snow on the Glacier Adventure Trail. Other exciting experiences in summer: whizz down the natural snow track on the Zipfelbobs or climb in the Zugspitze Alpine Park and visit the Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.
Mountain climbing on the Zugspitze in summer
For passionate mountaineers, climbing the Zugspitze is a dream destination on the to-do list. Numerous challenging tours await mountaineers around the golden summit cross. The Jubiläumsgrat is just as popular as it is well-known. It is one of the most spectacular ridge crossings in the Eastern Alps and has a special appeal for experienced mountaineers. The ridge hike is a constant up and down over 5,3 kilometers and requires a lot of stamina, surefootedness and experience. But it's worth it: you'll be accompanied by fantastic views over the Werdenfelser Land and into the Höllental.
If you want to climb the Zugspitze on foot in summer, you can take various routes from the surrounding valleys. The easiest but also the longest route is through the Reintal, which mostly only requires technical skills at the end. The climb through the Höllental is popular but challenging. On the six to eight-hour route through the impressive Höllentalklamm, you have to climb 2.200 meters in altitude. This climb is only for very experienced mountaineers. The shortest route to the summit on foot runs from the Eibsee via the Wiener-Neustädter-Hütte.
The Zugspitze – a delight in both summer and winter!
