TOP OF GERMANY
Zugspitze
Breathtaking views and a feeling of pure freedom await you on the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. The experience alone makes it worth taking a holiday in Bavaria.
The mountain is 2,962 metres tall, which really is close to the heavens. The Zugspitze is as close to the heavens as you can get in Germany. Upon arrival at the top, you’ll be greeted with 360° panoramic views that guarantee a feeling of endless expanse and freedom. Beneath you, you’ll see 400 alpine peaks across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy and up to 250 kilometres away in the distance. Up there, everyday worries suddenly seem quite insignificant and you can seize the summit happiness with both hands. Welcome to the Zugspitze. So close to heaven!
Despite its height, the Zugspitze summit is accessible to everyone, even those without many years of mountaineering experience. The modern Zugspitze cable car, traditional cogwheel train and, last but not least, the glacier cable car transport you to the viewing platform with fantastic views across 4 countries. Breathtaking views, refreshing mountain air and an unforgettable experience guaranteed.
The journey to the Zugspitze starts at Lake Eibsee or from the train station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Lake Eibsee is also a popular tourist destination in the Zugspitze region. From the train station, you can take a nostalgic cogwheel train ride up to the Zugspitze viewing platform. Head back down on the new Zugspitze cable car with its glass windows which provide stunning views of the picturesque Lake Eibsee and upper Bavarian foothills.
The Klosterhotel Ettal is just a 20-minute drive from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. You can reach the car park at Lake Eibsee in around half an hour. Find all prices and travel times of the Zugspitze circular trips and additional information on the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway website.
